NIGERIA: Archbishop Condemns Killings of Nigerians in Kaduna
(CISA)

KADUNA JANUARY 10, 2017 (CISA) – Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Jos has condemned the recent killings in Kaduna and other parts of Nigeria and called on the government to find a lasting solution to the issue.

Archbishop Kaigama, who is the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, said this in an article titled: “The Sacredness of Life Versus the Slaughter of Innocent Nigerian Citizens Today” released on January 8.

The Archbishop expressed worry over the needless destruction of lives and property in Southern Kaduna where there are reports of killings across 53 villages in the four local government areas, reported Vatican Radio.

“…How can human lives be so casually terminated? It is a pity that the younger generation in Nigeria is growing with an unfortunate impression that life is very cheap and can be taken away by anyone or group,” said Archbishop Kaigama.

“We have had rough, tough and bad times when innocent Nigerians lost their lives as it is being experienced now in Southern Kaduna. Before now, it was Agatu, Madagali, Gwoza, Yobe, Plateau, parts of Taraba, Nasarawa, Anambra, Abia and other parts of the country and where next,” he added.

The cleric commended the security agencies for responding swiftly to the Southern Kaduna crisis, and urged them to be highly professional and apolitical in the discharge of their duties.

He further called on President Muhammadu Buhari to break the silence, adopt stringent and proactive measures to end the killings in Southern Kaduna and other crisis prone areas in the country.

About 808 people were killed in mass killings that happened notwithstanding a 24 hours curfew in place, read a statement signed by Fr Ibrahim Yakubu, the Vicar-General of Kafanchan Catholic Archdiocese, on December 30.

According to the statement 1,422 houses, 16 Churches, 19 shops, and one primary school were torched and destroyed in the brutal violence. Fulani herdsmen, blamed for the killings, are said to have targeted mostly Christian, ethnic minorities and Shiite Muslims in the killings.

Having Ash Wednesday begin so soon again in February makes it difficult for me to understand. I usually accept the fact that I must just roll with it. Ready or not, Lent is here and I will accept that and keep on doing the best I can!

The Heavy Burdens We Carry »

I have been thinking a great deal about my experience at Reconciliation this past Saturday. I felt an intense and unexplainable urge to go and confess my sins when I woke up that morning. I try to go every six weeks or so, but this was no routine visit to the priest for me. I needed to unburden myself of the numerous venial sins I had committed since I last participated in this Sacrament.

When Your Faith Is Put to the Test - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon»

Friends, we come now to the Second Sunday of Lent, and we’re on both dangerous and very holy ground with the first reading from the twenty-second chapter of Genesis. The ancient Israelites referred to it as the “Akedah,” which means the “binding”: Abraham binds and is ready to sacrifice Isaac at God’s command.
