The Role of Lent in the Perfection of Our Being

Tonia O. Alabi

So soon, we are looking forward to another Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten Season. How time flies?

Can we consider what last year's Lent achieved for us in the past year? Can I say I am gaining more understanding of my faith and this is helping to improve my relationship with people in my life? Am I more at peace with myself even with the many challenges life brings, just because I have a new understanding of whom I am in the plan of God?

If we are able to ask ourselves these questions, we may come to truly appreciate what Lent means and why God came down to the world in the form of man. Presenting Himself as the son even sends a stronger message considering how we human beings react when anything affects in an adverse manner our loved one, be it a spouse or child. What I am saying here, is that God gave the greatest sacrifice to have you and I saved from the enemy.

Heaven is our ultimate home, but to gain Heaven even while on this planet is to rise above our challenges and focus upon that which matters, peace with your immediate neighbour, no matter the cost. To die to self is the main sacrifice - your expectation of the other person. Empathy for the situation of the other person could help us and with selfless love we could give them another chance as Jesus always does for us that we may experience his enduring mercy and love. The benefit for you as a person is enormous, the biggest is the Peace you have in your heart, which in turn helps you to keep healthy. Most terminal diseases come from prolong worries. Keep your peace by giving the situation to the one who can best manage it- Jesus'.

My prayer is that, we may pay more attention and give our time to the Church this season. Take advantage of that which has been prepared to help us in our appraisal of self (our life in Christ.) This will help us to do true penance and start a new life in Christ. That way we would all be Winners in Christ.
